Bedtime with two kids was one of my worst fears while I was pregnant with my Phoenix. We cosleep and I’ve always laid down with Indie for bedtime and cuddled her until she fell asleep. I didn’t want to lose this time with her and when Phoenix came along I tried to figure out how to put both girls to sleep together at the same time. I did this by lying on my side facing Phoenix while she nursed, and Indigo would koala on my back. Some nights have been sweet. I love snuggling with the girls. But, so many nights have been miserable. My skin crawls because nursing a super fussy baby, while a three year old pulls on my arm, licks my ears, whines, etc. is a nightmare. Not to mention, Indigo saying, “Mommy, I want you. Turn this way. I want you to hold me.” was so heartbreaking.
So, the other night I finally had enough with the mom guilt and the stress and I had an idea! I bought Indigo a little boombox and headphones… SO old school, but I don’t want Indigo looking at a blue screen before bed. I was worried they didn’t sell them anymore, but they do (I linked a couple on amazon). Then we went to the library and checked out some audiobooks! They have Disney stories too. I sat down and talked with Indie about the new plan. I told her that I was missing my cuddle time with her at night and since she’s such a big girl she can stay up later than her sister. Her job is to sit next to us and listened to her books until her sister falls asleep, then I will cuddle her.
Well… it’s working! Indie waits quietly… I get to snuggle and nurse Phoenix and when she’s out I crawl over to Indie’s side of the bed and she lays on my chest until she falls asleep. I had forgotten that she used to do this until my stomach got too big and pregnant. Oh and tonight, she said, “You’re the best, mom.” It made me feel so good. I think she just needed her own time and it’s surprisingly taking me less time to get them to sleep!
I should also mention I’ve been using another secret weapon, Sleepyize (it’s got, lavender, roman chamomile, bergamot, tangerine, geranium, frankincense, valerian root, and rue oils). I rub it on the girls’ feet (especially their big toes) and diffuse it in the room. It’s cut about 20 minutes off the time it takes them to fall asleep.
So, I hope this post didn’t just jinx everything! Also, I know everything will probably shift again and I’ll need to come up with something new. But for now this is working :).
